Despite the limited range of raw materials, approximately 500 varieties of cheese recognized by the International Dairy Federation are produced. Cheese is the most diverse group of dairy products and is, arguably, the most academically interesting and challenging. While many dairy products—if properly manufactured and stored—are biologically, biochemically and chemically very stable, cheeses are, in contrast, biologically and biochemically active, and, consequently undergo changes in flavor, texture, and functionality, to a degree which is variety dependent, during storage.
We wanted to reflect this complexity through our multi-faceted, data-driven identity system. The patterns are determined by the method of production, the colors by the type of milk and the aroma, and the height by the age and hardness of the cheese, and the cut by the risk of extinction. We use these factors of categorization to paint a story about each individual cheese, highlighting the unique and traditional processes that go into the wonderful craft of cheesemaking.
The Cheese Foundry is bold, playful, and dynamic, inviting us to embrace the traditional roots of cheesemaking through a contemporary lens. It evolves with the seasons, introducing new cheeses from traditional cheesemongers to join the spotlight every quarter. The logo is divided into four quadrants, representing the change of each season: blue for winter, orange for summer, purple for fall, and green for spring.
At the start of every season, four new cheeses from a specific region are celebrated, available as a subscription box. This particular box celebrates cheese from the region of Jura, France, during the winter season: Compte, Emmental, Bleu De Gex, and Mont D'Or. These four cheeses, while all being of cow's milk variety, have differences in age, method of production, aroma, and rate of extinction, thereby creating four distinct identities. By highlighting one region at a time, customers can appreciate the unique terroir of a place, and the craft that goes into the making of each cheese.
The Cheese Foundry also features an app, in which users can rate, explore, and discover new cheeses to try. Users can create their own unique cheese profile using the system provided, and can add, rate, and search for cheese recommendations. It's for cheese enthusiasts to congregate and discuss all things related to cheese, encouraging users to expand their horizons and discover new flavors.
